Cangon Country Cottage
Polo at Cangon Cottage
Horses at Cangon have had a long history with the Mackay family being involved with the cattle business. The horses bred at Cangon have always been thoroughbreds and have had to be versatile enough to work long hours after cattle on many different and often dangerous terrain ranging from the alluvial flats at Dungog to the steep hills and timbered country of the Barrington Tops in the Gloucester area, some 12,000 acres or 4,800 hectares in total area.
For the last eighty years the Cangon thoroughbreds have had an extra duty to perform, in that of a polo pony. The work and experience received during the many days doing cattle work, has produced horses that are very adaptable to polo. The selective breeding program adapted by the Mackay family has today resulted in the production of world class thoroughbred polo ponies.
Their reputation is well known within Australia with progeny being represented in every state of Australia. From 1980, the Mackay thoroughbred polo ponies have been exported overseas to many polo playing nations including England, America, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines with great success. They have been rewarded with many best playing pony awards including Best Playing Pony at the United States Open, possibly the most coveted award in the world.
With their unique temperament and athletic ability derived from years of selective breeding the Mackay family are able to offer polo ponies for sale to cater for all levels of polo.
With the advent of the Cangon Cottages the Mackay family are able to offer visiting players from either Australia or overseas a unique opportunity to stay in our Cottages and be coached in the game by 7 goal player Jamie Mackay. This provides a wonderful opportunity to try ponies before purchasing.
